Design for Sustainability and Project Management Literature – A Review

    Get PDF
AbstractThe growing pressure on natural resources and increasing global trade have made sustainability issues a prime area of concern for all businesses alike. The increased focus on sustainability has impacted the way projects are conceived, planned, executed and evaluated in industries. Since project management literature has hardly been considered in design for sustainability research, this article attempts to review the points of intersection between these two fields, and explores the potential that knowledge from project management literature has in improving efficiency and effectiveness of development and implementation of design for sustainability tools

Quantum Dots: Application for the Detection of Salmonella typhimurium

    Get PDF
Quantum dots (QDs) or nanocrystals 5 to 50 nm in size have recently emerged as a novel and promising class of fluorophores for cellular imaging. Unlike conventional organic dyes, QDs can be excited by a wide spectrum of wavelengths to give enhanced photostability, and their emission spectra, which differ according to size and material composition, are narrow, symmetrical, and tunable. This novel detection strategy can significantly improve the efficiency of molecular techniques used in the identification of important microbes related to human diseases. The aim of this study was to apply QDs linked antibodies to detect pathogenic Salmonella typhimurium cells. The signal, photostabilty and efficiency of QDs linked antibodies was compared with the organic fluorophore linked antibody for the detection of Salmonella cells. The use of QDs as fluorophores has shown greater enhancement in photostability and brighter signal than conven-tional organic dyes in detecting S. typhimurium cells. This approach might also be extended for the simultaneous detection of more than one pathogenic microorganism in the clinical, food or environmental samples by using specific antibodies linked with the QDs of different sizes and colors

PLC Based Load Sharing of Transformers

    Get PDF
The transformer is very expensive and bulky power system equipment. It runs and feed the load for 24 hours a day. Sometimes the load on the transformer unexpectedly rises above its rated capacity in that situation the load on the transformer increases and it will be overloaded and current will increase and cause overheating which in results damage the insulation of transformer. That insulation failure resulting in interruption of power supply. The common problems which transformer face is overloading voltage fluctuations and heating effect. It takes lot of time to fix the transformer so that a device need to be introduced a device which would help in automatically sharing of these over voltages. We will try to build an automated transformer sharing system in this project where the transformer current is confined to auxiliary transformer and automatically enters system. There are three transformers working as sources in this project, initially when the main switched ON the load that time load will be shared through the first transformer but when the load on first transformer suddenly increase above its reference value then immediately second transformer connected parallel with first transformer automatically through PLC by busing relay circuit

A Model of Open Source Software-Based Product Line Development

    Get PDF
Software Product Line (SPL) and Open Source Software (OSS) have emerged as successful modes of developing software. There is an increased interest in developing suitable approaches for combining the promised advantages of SPL andOSS. Researchers and practitioners have been emphasizing the need of exploiting the ever growing repositories ofOSScomponents for developing SPLs. However, there is no conceptual model for guiding the process of developing OSS-based SPLs. In this paper, we propose a model for developing software product line using open source software. This paper identifies and elaborates the essential phases and activities of the proposed model of developing OSS-based SPLs. This model emphasizes the vital role of software architecture and asserts that software architectures ofOSScan be exploited to establish a SPL. To demonstrate this, we have evaluated Eclipse’s architecture for its potential to support different flavors of a system

Role of community health nurse in earthquake affected areas

    Get PDF
The role of Community Health Nurses (CHNs) outside the traditional hospital setting is meant to provide and promote the health care needs of the community. Such nurses can play a substantial role in the community setting including emergencies like disasters. This became evident after the earthquake of October 8, 2005 in Pakistan. The objective was to address the issues, faced by primary healthcare providers working in earthquake-affected areas focusing on participatory approach. The experience of the interventions done by CHN by a guided frame work (assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation components) is described. Issues identified by CHN included: lack of training of health care providers, lack of collaboration, communication between the medical and management staff due to poor infrastructure of the healthcare facilities. The interventions were carried out, utilizing existing resources. Efforts were directed to build capacity of health care providers at grass root level to fill in gaps of health care delivery system for sustainable change. Overall, working in the earthquake affected areas is challenging. Health leadership should foresee role of CHN in emergencies where quality healthcare interventions are essential
